I hated this. I hated knowing what I wanted and knowing what was right and knowing they weren’t the same thing.

You’re going to be sad.
You’re going to want to scream and punch things.
Do it.
Let out every ounce of anger you have.
Sit on the floor and cry until you feel numb.
Listen to songs that make your heart sink to your feet.
Write angry letters to all the people who have broken you, left you, ignored you or hurt you.
Throw your hairbrush at the wall.
Do it twelve times.
Do it until you feel like you can breathe again.

You’re going to be sad.
You’re going to want to hurt yourself.
Don’t you dare do it.
Sit on the floor and watch cartoons like you did when you were little.
Listen to songs that make you want to dance around your bedroom in your underwear at 3 A.M.
Make paper airplanes out of those angry letters and watch them soar into the fireplace.
Brush all the knots out of your hair and say “I am worth it” into the mirror.
Say it twelve times.
Say it until you feel like you can breathe again.

You’re going to be sad.
You’re going to get through it.

I want to take your beautiful brown hands,
and hold them to my heart,
so you can feel that our hearts feel the same pain,
one woman of colour to another.
Growing up,
I was often told to stay out of the sun in case I resembled a gulabjamun over rasmalai,
a chilling joke made by elders in my family,
and even now, when I take off my hijab,
the tan lines around the sides of my face make me want to sit in the shade for the rest of my life,
because like grandma says,
who’ll want to marry a dark girl?
I watch documentaries about my home country and very rarely see a fair face in the crowd,
so I am confused about how I can be both proud of my heritage and ashamed of my colour,
when it so obvious that they come hand in hand.
One one hand, I want to cover my body in every cosmetic it takes to make me feel accepted in this harsh community,
but on the other hand,
I want to burn every bottle of ‘fair and lovely’ and skin lightening bleach,
and run into the sun with the women I call my sisters,
beautiful brown women,
with their dark hair and thick eyebrows intact. We are at war with the way God made us,
and I pray that we wake up one morning hugging ourselves and everything that makes us who we are.

One time when Sirius was helping out with Mrs. Potter’s baking she asked him to stir the batter and he replied with a “sure, Mom” and almost dropped the bowl as he realised what he said. But then James sneaked up behind him to try and stick his finger in the batter and Mrs. Potter slapped at his hand and complained about her messy sons, and Sirius just beamed

Synonyms are weird because if you invite someone to your cottage in the forest that just sounds nice and cozy, but if I invite you to my cabin in the woods you’re going to die.

My dad just saw my report card and started yelling at me because there was an F on it, but it actually was F for female as in gender

my dad used to always look at my report cards and say, “An F in sex?! Good. Good.”

Don’t date a girl just because everyone else in the room can’t take their eyes off her, or that black dress hugs her curves perfectly. Date a girl who you think about while waiting for the subway. Who makes you want your words to sound like some pretentious asshole who sits at Starbucks all day with a laptop wrote them. Date a girl who makes you think of stargazing in the summer and hot drinks in the winter. Don’t date a girl you can see the rest of your life with, date a girl who makes certain moments of your life unforgettable. Don’t date a girl who if after two weeks she “won’t give it up” to you. Don’t date a girl who if after 6 months won’t give it up. Date a girl who you will wait till the ends of the earth till she’s ready, a girl who you will gladly light the candles for. Date a girl who you will do anything to get that smile that melts your heart. Don’t date a girl who you’re dependent on. Date a girl who makes you more dependent on yourself to be better.
